Bethunes Gully - 365/31

Well I have survived the first month of the challenge. I have taken some photos I like and there are others that make me cringe. But each photo is helping me to think about composition and lighting and how the camera works etc. My fellow 365ers provide me with so much inspiration I'm really enjoying this challenge.

Today's photo is set at Bethunes Gully in the late afternoon on a cloudy day.

Surf - 365/30

It was what they class as warm here in Dunedin, nearing 20 degrees celcius (brrr). So therefore my daughter had to go to the beach for a swim. One good thing is the winds make for nice large surf. (I couldn't decide if I liked the full image or the close up).

The real Jessica Bunny Rabbit - 365/29

Jessica got loose in the garden again today, this is a common occurrence, she always comes back inside because it's warmer and there is food. Today she was making friends with a garden bunny ornament.

Flagstaff hill - 365/28

I went for a walk up the top of Flagstaff Hill, one of the many lovely hills to climb in Dunedin. I love the colour of the tussock grass. In the background you can see Saddle Hill in the haze. It was a lovely walk.

Dinner at the beach - 365/27

We decided to have dinner at the beach tonight while the boys were away at the ACDC concert in Wellington. This photo was taken at 9:30 at night in Dunedin at St Kilda beach, don't you love daylight saving.

Gargoyles - 365/26

Here's a holiday game for anyone coming to Dunedin. It is funny what you see when you start walking around with a camera. If you walk down the main street and look up at the buildings you will notice gargoyles everywhere. See if you can find these ones next time you're in town.

Robbie Burns - 365/25

It is Robbie Burns birthday today apparently. So here is his statue which stands in the centre of the Octagon in Dunedin.

My house - 365/24

After building a panorama with PSE manually yesterday, today I found out that PSE will do all the work automatically for you. All you have to do is open the images you want to use then go file, new, and then choose new panorama and tada! So here we have a picture of my house.

Stafford Street - 365/23

This is the view at the top of Stafford Street looking down on the town and the harbour. I love this view, it is different every time the weather changes. I had a go at stitching photos together with PSE and thought this worked out quite well.

Boys toys - 365/22

As you can imagine, my neighbours love me.

This is the side of the top storey of our house as reflected in the next door neighbour's window.

My new toy 365/20

Today I bit the bullet and bought myself an entry level DSLR camera. Now I have an excuse to go out on photography walks and I'm looking forward to it. Just have to find a way to fit my hobby in around work hmmm.

Here is an initial test shot, still have to work out how to use all the bells and whistles.

Dinner - 365/19

My better half received a curry cook book for Christmas and is building us a delicious curry for dinner tonight. The ingredients themselves are a sumptuous vision.

Bunny in a basket - 365/18

Easter is not until April but this bunny is getting things ready early.

Playing with depth of field - 365/17

I have been reading some of my favourite photography blogs in an attempt to improve my photography. I have been a point and shoot with no regard for composition, lighting, etc for a long time and now I want to actually tell a story or evoke a feeling with photography. At the moment I am using a camera without any manual settings so I am finding ways around that. I read to get the effect of the background out of focus with an automatic camera you use the full extent of the zoom lens on your subject and have them stand away from the background in question. I'm quite pleased with how this image turned out. I'm going to try using a tripod next time to see if I can get my point of focus even sharper.

Here are some of the blogs I've been enjoying reading:

What are some blogs or sites you enjoy for improving your photography?

A little piece of my garden - 365/16

My garden is a veritable wild wonderland with little pockets of magic where ever you look. This is even better when the sun comes out.

Summer in Dunedin - 365/15

This is the view down Stafford Street towards the city of Dunedin on a summer morning. Luckily those clouds did disperse for an afternoon of occasional sunshine. This is one of my favourite views in Dunedin and it is different every day.

Welcome home - 365/14

Our beloved Jessica has been staying in an outside cage with a friend for a month. She is an inside bunny so I don't think she liked camping out all that much. She is now nicely back in her snug little kennel and will be back in the house when we have managed to settle ourselves in. She is a little wild at the moment, but I would be too if I was used to being pampered and had to go camping.

The unused path - 365/13

We have a bush on either side of our path to the front door. A month of neglect has them almost touching as they have grown across the path. It was a struggle to get the suitcases and ourselves past them to the house. Lots of work to be done...

Goodbye Perth - 365/12

The post holiday blues are setting in. The holiday is over, goodbye nice weather - hello Dunedin.

Kayaking on the Swan- 365/11

Our last full day in Perth called for a trip kayaking on the Swan River. Time to go home tomorrow back to reality and the cold weather of Dunedin.

A day at the zoo - 365/10

Today was spent at the Perth Zoo. Five hours walking around looking at animals. It was a good day as it wasn't too hot, just about 27 degrees and the animals were quite active. This photo was taken with the iphone at arms length.

Another nice walk - 365/9

Today was another lovely walk around the bridges in Perth with my friend Deb. On our way around we found this chair so we needed Debra to pose on the Deborah chair. We shaved a whole 15 minutes off our time and deserved the plate of fresh fruit in the cafe for breakfast.

The beach - 365/8

Today began and ended at the beach. In the morning the girls went to Hilary's Boat Harbour and had a splash in the waves, the water was beautiful.

In the evening I went for a walk with my friend Deb along North Beach and watched the sunset. What a perfect day.

Mandurah - 365/7

As you can see my daughter and two nieces are the quiet retiring types. Today we caught the train from Guildford into Perth and then walked down to the new Perth underground (didn't even know this existed!) and caught the train out to Mandurah. This used to be about a two hour car trip and now it is a one hour train trip - progress. This photo was taken on the Mandurah foreshore where we ate lunch and the girls went for a swim.

Seventy two - 365/6

Happy birthday mum!

Going home - 365/5

I am spending the night at my mum's house in preparation for her 72nd birthday tomorrow. There is something strange about going home. For some reason you revert from a mature responsible adult into a lazy teenager.

Also It is an interesting phenomenon to see a home where your childhood is enshrined, almost like your own museum.

The Spinal Tap moment - 365/4

Today was all Bon Scott all day. For those of you not in the know, Bon Scott was the lead singer in ACDC and is buried in Perth. We went looking for his grave at the Fremantle cemetery and instead found a plaque in a remembrance garden. I think there were problems with people stealing the headstone or something.

After this spinal tap moment (the boys resisted singing at the cemetery) we went to find the statue of Bon Scott that had been erected in Fremantle.

Walking with a friend - 365/3

One of the things I most enjoyed when living in Perth was walking the loop around the causeway bridge and the bridge near the Burswood Casino with my friend Deb. This photo is from our walking and talking today in the beautiful early morning sunshine.

The boys at Bilgoman Pool - 365/2

An ongoing theme in our family is that whenever I get the camera out the boys hide. Here is a typical snapshot which fills our family albums - The boys at Bilgoman Pool in Perth.

Under the Bridge - Perth 365/1

This was taken under the Mt Henry bridge about 6am in the morning. There had been bush fires so the sky is all smokey and the horizon a burnt orange.

This photo was taken a week later at 8am in the morning underneath the Freeway Bridge near the Burswood Casino. It was a beautiful clear morning without a cloud in the sky. The buildings in the background are the high rises of Perth.
