Bethunes Gully - 365/31
Well I have survived the first month of the challenge. I have taken some photos I like and there are others that make me cringe. But each photo is helping me to think about composition and lighting and how the camera works etc. My fellow 365ers provide me with so much inspiration I'm really enjoying this challenge.

Dinner at the beach - 365/27
We decided to have dinner at the beach tonight while the boys were away at the ACDC concert in Wellington. This photo was taken at 9:30 at night in Dunedin at St Kilda beach, don't you love daylight saving.

My new toy 365/20
Today I bit the bullet and bought myself an entry level DSLR camera. Now I have an excuse to go out on photography walks and I'm looking forward to it. Just have to find a way to fit my hobby in around work hmmm.
Here is an initial test shot, still have to work out how to use all the bells and whistles.

Playing with depth of field - 365/17
I have been reading some of my favourite photography blogs in an attempt to improve my photography. I have been a point and shoot with no regard for composition, lighting, etc for a long time and now I want to actually tell a story or evoke a feeling with photography. At the moment I am using a camera without any manual settings so I am finding ways around that. I read to get the effect of the background out of focus with an automatic camera you use the full extent of the zoom lens on your subject and have them stand away from the background in question. I'm quite pleased with how this image turned out. I'm going to try using a tripod next time to see if I can get my point of focus even sharper.
Here are some of the blogs I've been enjoying reading:

Welcome home - 365/14
Our beloved Jessica has been staying in an outside cage with a friend for a month. She is an inside bunny so I don't think she liked camping out all that much. She is now nicely back in her snug little kennel and will be back in the house when we have managed to settle ourselves in. She is a little wild at the moment, but I would be too if I was used to being pampered and had to go camping.

A day at the zoo - 365/10
Today was spent at the Perth Zoo. Five hours walking around looking at animals. It was a good day as it wasn't too hot, just about 27 degrees and the animals were quite active. This photo was taken with the iphone at arms length.

The beach - 365/8
Today began and ended at the beach. In the morning the girls went to Hilary's Boat Harbour and had a splash in the waves, the water was beautiful.

Mandurah - 365/7
As you can see my daughter and two nieces are the quiet retiring types. Today we caught the train from Guildford into Perth and then walked down to the new Perth underground (didn't even know this existed!) and caught the train out to Mandurah. This used to be about a two hour car trip and now it is a one hour train trip - progress. This photo was taken on the Mandurah foreshore where we ate lunch and the girls went for a swim.

Also It is an interesting phenomenon to see a home where your childhood is enshrined, almost like your own museum.

The Spinal Tap moment - 365/4
Today was all Bon Scott all day. For those of you not in the know, Bon Scott was the lead singer in ACDC and is buried in Perth. We went looking for his grave at the Fremantle cemetery and instead found a plaque in a remembrance garden. I think there were problems with people stealing the headstone or something.
After this spinal tap moment (the boys resisted singing at the cemetery) we went to find the statue of Bon Scott that had been erected in Fremantle.

Under the Bridge - Perth 365/1
This was taken under the Mt Henry bridge about 6am in the morning. There had been bush fires so the sky is all smokey and the horizon a burnt orange.
This photo was taken a week later at 8am in the morning underneath the Freeway Bridge near the Burswood Casino. It was a beautiful clear morning without a cloud in the sky. The buildings in the background are the high rises of Perth.
